Paradigm Shifts: Encouraging a New Way of Thinking Together

A paradigm is a "systematic way of thinking and a set of assumptions or worldview that determines the way one acts."

Campusreaching is not only about changing how we do things, it is also about changing how we think. In many Campusreaching movements we have seen certain paradigm shifts that seem to foster transformation. Therefore, we openly encourage the following shifts among leaders as we build new Campusreaching efforts:

  • Moving from church growth toward closure.
Measuring our success each year by how much of the whole campus we have reached, not just by whether our group grew in numbers. Every group can grow in numbers and still be losing the battle for completion of the Great Commission on a campus.
  • Moving from a "come-to Church" toward a "go-to Church."
Focusing more on how we can go to unbelievers rather than how to get them to come to our things and events.
  • Moving from fellowship toward functional unity.
True biblical unity has a purpose beyond just "unity for the sake of being together." The purpose of biblical unity as outlined in John 17:23 is so that we can better reach the unreached. Our unity must produce practical action.
  • Moving from independent local congregations towards a local congregation working together as a regional church.
Realizing that even if the ministry/church I work with or lead is successful on every front, it is only one part of the Body of Christ, and that it will take other ministries/churches to fulfill the task of transformation on the campus.
