College Students: The Powerful Percent
College students make up 5.25% of our national population (according to 2000 Census data). It is critical we reach them with the message of Christ because of the disproportionate impact they will have as a group on our nation. Former President of the United Nations General Assembly and respected Christian, Charles Malik Ph.D, wrote "More potently than by any other means, change the university and you change the world."

  • Today's college students will eb tomorrow's business CEOs, church pastors and congressmen.
  • It is a time in life when people are open to exploring new ideas and their own spirituality, so it can be a ripe harvest field.
  • Throughout history, revivals and spiritual awakenings have begun on college campuses and then spread throughout the nation.
Someone or something will capture the attention of our nation's college students. The 1960's free love movement is an example of how the beliefs of college students can affect the population at large even decades later. It is vital that we definitively win the battle for the hearts and minds of our nation's college students.

College Ministries Are Making Progress But Losing Ground Overall

  • On average, less than 5% of the students on a campus have a relationship with Jesus.
  • 62.8% of college ministries in America saw zero to six people come to Christ in the 2003-2004 school year.
The task is comparable to a man using a teacup to bail water out of a sinking boat which has sprung a large leak. that person is doing good by getting some water out of the boat, but the boat will sink because it will fill with water faster than he can bail it out.

When success in college ministry is measured in relation to previous successes, it often seems progress is being made when several groups/churches are growing in number. However, when success is measured in relation to the transformation of an overall campus, the results will show that growth in the Body of Christ is not even keeping pace with rising enrollment. As a percentage of the whole campus, many times the Body of Christ is actually declining.
